Sriwhana Spong, Learning Duets, choreographed and danced by Benjamin Ord, HD video, 2012
The choreography for Learning Duets was conceived as an ongoing horozontal progression made in reference to the length of the beach where it was filmed rather than the black box of the theatre or the white cube of the gallery. The movement invokes the languid and everyday expression of leisure time as inspired by early modernist depictions of fashionable beach recreation. Improvised segments of material refer to the immediacy of performing in the surrounding environment, where the body stutters on and re-enacts its own history, while attempting to be in partnership with the present.
